Tony Smith was born in Western Australia on 12 February 1939. He enlisted in the Army on 30 July 1956 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Artillery. He was posted to 1 SAS Company Royal Australian Infantry on 24 November 1957.

Tony came from 1st Field Regiment with the rank of Gunner but transferred to the Royal Australian Infantry on posting to 1 SAS Company. Tony was drowned in the Avon River Western Australia on 5 August 1960 while attempting a river crossing during a platoon patrol exercise.

Tony’s next-of-kin at the time of his death was his mother.
