Paddy enlisted in the Army on 1 February 1977 and was posted to 8/9 RAR. He was selected on the 1/80 Cadre Course and was posted to SASR on the 5 Sept 1980.

He served in L Troop, 3 SAS SQN and 1 SAS SQN as a sniper online. Unfortunately Paddy had a severe rappelling accident at Nowra in 1985, in which he received multiple fractures of his legs and back. During rehabilitation in hospital, he contracted a staph infection, which further complicated his recovery. Due to his injuries Paddy was medically downgraded and posted from SASR on 19 November 1985 and discharged from the Army on 11 February 1986.
