John was a keen Motorcyclist and was a life member of the Veterans MC Victoria Chapter. This was posted on their Facebook site:

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of John Harper (Harps) SASR and Life member.

Affectionately know as Dad or Old Bastard to his boys at Vic chapter he died while riding his pride and Joy (Sweet Pea) whilst doing a reconnaissance in Country Victoria for a trip he was planning for us.

He loved the Club and his boys and we loved him, you will be sadly missed but never forgotten Brother.
