Darren Smith was born in Queensland on 28 September 1968. He enlisted in the Army on 30 June 1986 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Signals. He was posted to 152 Signals Squadron on 14 January 1990 and underwent SAS selection in 1991. Darren came from 139 Signals Squadron with the rank of Corporal and retained his rank on posting to SASR. Darren died on 12 June 1996 when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed at High Range training area near Townsville in Queensland. Darren’s next-of-kin at the time of his death was his father.
