David Johnstone was born in New South Wales on 3 October 1969. He enlisted in the Army on 19 November 1986 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry. He underwent SAS selection in 1991 and was posted to SASR on 22 May 1991. David came from 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment with the rank of Private. David died on 12 June 1996 when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed at the High Range training area near Townsville in Queensland. David’s next-of-kin at the time of his death was his father.
