Presenter’s Bio
Dr Sarah Hellewell
Dr Sarah Hellewell is a Senior Research Fellow in Neurotrauma at Curtin University and the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science in Perth, Australia. She is deputy lead of the neurodegeneration and pain domain at the Curtin Health Innovation and Research Institute and leads the brain injury program of 20 postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, PhD and Masters students. Dr Hellewell has both academic and industry research experience; In her 6 years of academic research, she has been awarded more than $4.9 million AUD and published over 50 articles. Her research uses MRI, fluid biomarkers and functional tests to understand how injury can alter brain structure and function, and how this translates to cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes.
Dr Amanda Jefferson
Dr Amanda Jefferson is a lecturer in the Curtin University Medical School, teaching neuroanatomy and neuroscience to a variety of health professionals including third year medical students. Amanda’s area of research at the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science, is on the impact mental health, level of resilience and personality type
has on recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (concussion).
Presentation Outline
During this presentation you will learn about the most common causes of concussion and the changes happening within the brain from the injury. The presenters will then discuss the types of symptoms one might experience post-concussion and the various ways concussion can be diagnosed. Treatment options and the trajectory of recovery will also be covered. The presentation will conclude with a brief discussion on the concussion research conducted at the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science in Perth.
